DIGikat
DiGikat is a multimedia installation that reflects threads of diversity imprinted by the everyday, and entwined by generations that continue to consider what it means to live together in mutual awe and respect. This work sets up a soundscape from familiar conversations and plays with the form and method of tapestry embedded across regions in Asia.
Coming from a deeply personal journey of one who returned home to Singapore after working abroad, I am inspired by the evolution of multiculturalism so quintessential of being a Singaporean. It is in language and dialogues that this rich complexity of cultures is transmitted foremost. On the other hand, my background in fashion and textiles expresses the potency of fabric to tell stories across time.
DiGikat fashions itself after the enduring, traditional craft of ikat – a fabric system in which our local cultures partake. The visuality of sound waves translates the voices of our communities into intricate patterns similar to the technique of ikat. In this modern take, the installation reflects a social fabric in motion.
“The most visually dazzling and TikTok-baiting exhibition at SAW 2025 is Yang Derong’s DIGikat – Our Social Fabric.”
